The Counselling Services Unit (CSU) operates as a non-partisan treatment center dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced various forms of violence. Our primary objective is to provide comprehensive assistance to victims, ensuring they receive the necessary care, resources, and emotional support to navigate their healing journey. Victims

Survivors or Victims

We refer to those impacted by physical or psychological harm as “survivors,” highlighting their remarkable resilience and strength. While other organizations may choose the term “victim,” our emphasis is on fostering empowerment and encouraging these individuals to take charge of their healing processes. By focusing on their inherent abilities and coping mechanisms, we strive to promote a narrative of recovery and agency, celebrating their journey toward healing and personal growth.

Trauma

For the sake of clarity, we define trauma as an event, a series of events, or circumstances that are perceived as physically or emotionally harmful or threatening. Such experiences can lead to enduring negative impacts on an individual’s functioning and overall well-being, as outlined by SAMHSA (2012). Trauma may manifest in various ways, affecting mental, emotional, and physical health, and can hinder an individual’s ability to cope with everyday life. By recognizing the profound effects of trauma, we can better support those affected on their path to recovery and healing.
